Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Starring: Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, Peter Ostrum

The film will be introduced by Williams College Visiting Professor of Chemistry Patrick S. Barber with a presentation on "The Science of Chocolate."

The 1971 classic musical film starring the inimitable Gene Wilder brings Roald Dahl’s beloved book alive. Charlie Bucket is a poor boy who defies expectations when he finds a Golden Ticket to tour the secretive Willy Wonka’s fantastical Chocolate Factory. On a whirlwind tour of Willy's incredible, edible realm of chocolate waterfalls, elfish Oompa-Loompas and industrial-sized confections, Charlie learns the sweetest secret of all: a generous, loving heart.

Patrick S. Barber has been a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at Williams College for three years and will be starting a tenure track position at Earlham College in the fall of 2017. He completed a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Music Performance at the University of West Florida and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Nevada-Reno. After three years as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Alabama, Patrick moved to Williamstown. His research interests lie in the design and synthesis of luminescent sensors for environmental and biological imaging.

The Science of Chocolate
Who doesn't love chocolate? Most of us do, but hardly know the large amount of science that goes into making the perfect tasty treat. Together, and with hands-on demonstrations, we will explore the process of making chocolate, the chemistry that holds it all together, and the impact of not eating chocolate quickly enough. Bring your taste-buds, your appetite, and your excitement!

“It is everything that family movies usually claim to be, but aren't: Delightful, funny, scary, exciting, and, most of all, a genuine work of imagination. Willy Wonka is such a surely and wonderfully spun fantasy that it works on all kinds of minds.”
