Upon learning of her rabbi father’s abrupt death, Ronit (Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz) returns home to Manhattan, where she is greeted with resentment and mistrust by the Orthodox community she was exiled from years earlier due to her attraction for her former best friend, Esti (Academy Award nominee Rachel McAdams). When a former friend and current rabbi, Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), invites Ronit to stay with him and Esti—now his wife—the two women find their passion for one another has not faded with time. Torn between love, religion and an intense need for personal freedom, the three childhood friends each struggle to find their place in a world where disobedience is the greatest sin of all.

Sebastián Lelio, director of the Academy Award winning film A Fantastic Woman, adapts Naomi Alderman’s novel with grace and sensitivity. Drawing powerful performances from his cast, Leilo powerfully captures the cloistered world of the women, revealing an intimate understanding of their deep connection and longing.
