Curatorial statement:
We picked Dirty Dancing because it's the perfect end of summer film. When it came out in 1987 both of us were not allowed to see it. Our conservative families of origin forbade it. When we finally saw Dirty Dancing it seemed like a historical film showing the 1963 Northeast where abortion was illegal and woman were often not able to have children after back alley "health care". Now today in 2025 we have backtracked and so many people lack access to affordable reproductive care. What at the time was a reflection of times past now seems like a current film of youth fighting for a new world that everyone needs to see!
